How long does it take precious gemstones (such as an emerald or sapphire) to form into a crystal?
I recently went to spend a few days at a ruby mine in the NC mountains and am now intrigued by all gemstones. I can’t seem to grasp the concept that something so beautiful forms in plain dirt. I always believed these stones were embedded in rocks. How long does it take these gemstones to form? Any good info on this will make my day!!!
It takes about 15 million years. And you are right, they did used to be in rock. The Appalachian mountain chain is the oldest in north America. Once they were the size of the Rockies. Now they have worn down and all the minerals that were once deep inside are on the surface. Little fact for you, one of the worlds largest emerald comes from N.C. A hiker found it just laying on to of the ground. It was about 150 carats and vauled at $300,000.
